Trophy Design for the NEIA Gambit

Design Parameters

This trophy design was made for New England Innovation Academy’s (NEIA) first sporting event; a chess tournament called the NEIA Gambit. With it came some design parameters defined by the Head of the Innovation Studio, John Turner, and the Student Life Coordinator, Alex Yu.

  • Design should be minimalist and elegant
  • First place should show off the schools new mascot
  • Entire project should only use tools and materials available in the Innovation Studio
  • Entire project should cost less than 100 dollars to produce

Second Place Final 02

The Rook

The second place trophy was designed as an abstraction of the rook chess piece. The final version of the design consists of hand painted pla plastic that is back filled with plaster for added weight and stability.  The raw 3D printed design was finished using tools and materials available within the NEIA Innovations Studio. The top coat consists of multiple layers of white primer followed by a gloss top coat.

First Place Final 03

The Night Owl

The first place trophy was designed as an abstraction of the NEIA mascot, the night owl. The final version of the design consists of hand painted pla plastic that is back filled with plaster for added weight and stability.  The raw 3D printed design was finished using tools and materials available within the NEIA Innovations Studio. The top coat consists of multiple layers of black primer followed by a matte top coat.

Advertising & Hype

To get students excited  for the upcoming tournament, the Head of the Innovation Studio as well as the Head of Marketing and Branding for NEIA, John Turner, Made a poster debuting the design for the first place trophy. This poster also debuted the school’s new mascot, the Night Owl. This resulted in a much larger turnout for the tournament called the NEIA Gambit. The winners of which can be seen down below with the trophys.
